CALERA, Ala. — The Calera community and the railroad industry are mourning the tragic loss of Charles Harrison, a dedicated CSX employee who was killed early Saturday morning in a devastating train derailment near the County Road 22 crossing.
According to the Shelby County Coroner’s Office, Harrison, 52, of Mountain Brook, lost his life when a CSX train derailed at approximately 3 a.m. near the County Road 22 crossing, close to the Sysco Foods facility in Calera. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after multiple railcars left the tracks. Calera Fire Chief Sean Kendrick confirmed that about six cars were involved in the derailment.
First responders worked through the early morning hours as the magnitude of the incident became clear. Despite their efforts, Harrison was pronounced dead at the scene. His passing marks a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, and coworkers who described him as a committed professional who took pride in his work.
As crews continue cleanup operations, the County Road 22 crossing remains closed for an undetermined amount of time. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a full investigation to determine what led to the derailment. Officials have not yet released further details regarding the cause of the crash.
