It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Douglas “Colby” Colborne, 63, of Amherst, who passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. Born in Halifax on February 5, 1962, Colby moved to Amherst with his mother at the age of two, and by his own account, he “had the best childhood.”

Colby’s life was marked by passion, dedication, and community spirit. An accomplished athlete, he excelled in hockey, baseball, and slo-pitch softball, earning accolades at every level. He captained the Amherst Ramblers, played in the Metro Valley League All-Star game, and contributed to numerous provincial and national championships in softball. His competitive drive and team spirit were unmatched, and he was a cornerstone of every team he played for.

Professionally, Colby dedicated 43 years of service to the Town of Amherst, proudly representing CUPE Local 1233, and served 25 years with the Amherst Fire Department, earning respect and admiration for his commitment to the community. Colby was known for his generosity, always ready to advocate for others and mentor those around him.

Outside of work and sports, Colby cherished family, friends, and simple pleasures—from hosting Friday night gatherings with his partner Julie, to relaxing in his hammock, perfecting his lawn, or immersing himself in sports. A lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Flyers, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Boston Red Sox, he delighted in sharing his encyclopedic knowledge of player stats and sports history with his boys and friends. One of his favorite memories was a 2024 trip to Toronto with his sons to enjoy a Blue Jays, Leafs, and Argonauts game.

Colby is survived by his fiancé, Julie (Blue) Smith, his beloved sons Jesse (Cali Hicks), Quinn, Brady, Jackson, stepson Eric Smith (Jannah), and grandchildren Angelina, Olivia, Archie, and Lorne. He is also survived by lifelong best friend Charlie Chambers, half-siblings David, Deborah, Brian, and Garnet, and many cousins and in-laws who loved him dearly.

Colby was predeceased by his parents, Gloria Dickinson and Glenn Colborne, and grandparents Grace and Lloyd Atkinson, Bill and Laura Colborne.

Colby’s sudden passing has left a profound void in Amherst. He was the definition of community-minded, a devoted father, grandfather, friend, mentor, and public servant. The Town of Amherst honors his legacy; flags have been lowered to half-mast in his memory. His spirit, dedication, and love will be forever remembered by all who knew him.
