With deep sorrow, we mourn the loss of Wendell Ayers, 56, of Huntington, Texas, who tragically lost his life in a fatal traffic crash on December 12, near Welsh, Louisiana.

According to Louisiana State Police Troop D, the deadly crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Interstate 10 West, approximately two miles west of Louisiana Highway 99 in Jeff Davis Parish. Wendell was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado towing a camper and traveling westbound in the left lane.

Investigators said a 2020 Peterbilt moved from the right lane into the left lane due to an emergency vehicle stopped on the shoulder. For reasons still under investigation, Wendell’s vehicle failed to slow and struck the rear of the Peterbilt.

Wendell was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Peterbilt was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries, and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

State police stated that impairment is not suspected, though standard toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis as part of the investigation. The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine all contributing factors.

Wendell’s sudden passing has left his family, friends, and community heartbroken. As they grieve this tragic loss, thoughts and prayers are with all who loved him. May his memory live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Rest in peace, Wendell Ayers. 🕊️
