NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The community is mourning the tragic loss of Robert O. Evans, 42, of Newport News, who died Friday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 664.

The crash occurred around 3:20 p.m. near the three-mile marker, where a 2017 Dodge Durango, a 2023 Kia Sorento, and a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport were stopped in traffic. A 2013 Hino Conventional truck failed to stop and struck Evans’ vehicle. The impact caused a chain reaction: the Durango collided with the Kia Sorento, which then struck the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, before the Hino truck struck the Sorento a second time.

Emergency responders arrived promptly, but despite their efforts, Evans was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The drivers of the Hino truck and Kia Sorento sustained minor injuries, while the Volkswagen driver was unharmed.

Family, friends, and neighbors have expressed deep sorrow over Evans’ passing. Known in the community as a caring and valued member of Newport News, his sudden death has left a profound impact on all who knew him.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate the crash to determine the circumstances and contributing factors. Authorities remind motorists to remain vigilant and cautious on highways, especially in areas of heavy traffic.

Evans’ untimely death is a solemn reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. His family and community continue to grieve this heartbreaking loss.
