DE SOTO — The De Soto community is grieving following a devastating house fire late Friday night that claimed the life of 11-year-old Conner Shaw, authorities confirmed.

Firefighters were dispatched to a mobile home in the 200 block of Plum Street at approximately 11:36 p.m. Friday after receiving reports of a fire. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. Despite their efforts, Conner suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the fire.

The mobile home, which was occupied by Conner and his parents at the time of the fire, was a total loss. His parents were able to escape the blaze. Funeral arrangements for Conner are pending.

De Soto Grade School, where Conner previously attended as a student, released a statement expressing sorrow over the tragic loss.

“DGS learned this morning of a former student’s passing yesterday evening. Our hearts are heavy with this news. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult period. Adults will be available for any student needing some time, space, or someone to talk to. Once a Ranger, always a Ranger,” the statement read.

The death of Conner Shaw has deeply affected the De Soto community, with an outpouring of support for the family during this heartbreaking time. A verified fundraiser has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses and securing a new residence following the loss of their home.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the devastating impact house fires can have on families and communities. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of fire safety as the investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
