CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Ill. — The Cahokia Heights community is mourning the tragic loss of 36-year-old Demario Johnson, who was killed in a shooting Wednesday at the Greystone Apartments.

According to authorities, the shooting occurred at the apartment complex, where Johnson and a child were both struck by gunfire. Cahokia Heights Police Chief Thomas Trice confirmed the incident and said the child was transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for medical treatment. Officials have not released the child’s age or current condition.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye confirmed that Johnson, a resident of the Greystone Apartments, died as a result of his injuries. His death has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving family members, friends, and neighbors struggling to process the sudden and violent loss.

Police have not announced whether a suspect has been identified, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details at this time.

The tragedy adds to ongoing concerns about gun violence at the Greystone Apartments.
