The Douglas community is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of Hector Meza, who passed away on December 16, 2025, after being struck by a vehicle on the I-10 freeway near the Vail City/Benson area. He was just 28 years old.

Hector was a beloved son, cherished family member, and loyal friend whose life, though marked by personal struggles with mental illness, was defined by kindness, compassion, and a genuine care for others. Those who knew him remember his warm heart, his gentle spirit, and the way he could make people feel seen and understood, even during his own difficult moments.

His sudden passing has left his family in profound shock and sorrow, especially his devoted mother, Mauri Tabitha Amaya, who loved him deeply and stood by him through every season of life. The pain of losing Hector is immeasurable, and his absence will be felt not only by his family, but by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
