COLUMBIA, S.C. — Brian Barrett, 30, tragically lost his life following a shooting incident late Saturday night in the northeast area of Columbia, leaving family, friends, and the community grieving a devastating loss.
According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, Brian died late Saturday after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred in the 800 block of Polo Road, where law enforcement responded to reports of a gunfire. Investigators said the incident began with an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation between Brian and another individual. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots, striking Brian in the upper chest, before fleeing the scene.
Deputies arrived shortly afterward and found Brian unresponsive with critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where, despite life-saving medical efforts, he was pronounced deceased.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department later confirmed that a 44-year-old man was taken into custody the following day in a neighboring area. The suspect was returned to Richland County and booked into the local detention center on multiple charges, including murder and weapons-related offenses. A bond hearing is pending as the investigation continues.
