The Chicago community is grieving the tragic loss of Matthew A. Siemer, 43, who passed away following a devastating seven-vehicle crash on Interstate 57 in Coles County, Illinois, on Saturday morning. According to the Coles County Coroner’s Office, Matthew was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:09 a.m.
Illinois State Police reported that the crash occurred just before 10 a.m. on I-57 southbound near milepost 203, south of Arcola. The collision involved five commercial motor vehicles and two passenger vehicles during extremely slick and hazardous road conditions. Following the crash, I-57 southbound was shut down for several hours, with traffic diverted at Exit 203, as emergency crews responded and investigators worked the scene. All lanes reopened later that afternoon.
Matthew’s wife was also involved in the crash and was transported to Carle Hospital in Urbana with injuries. Her condition has not been publicly released. No other fatalities were reported in connection with the incident.
The loss of Matthew has left family, friends, and loved ones heartbroken across Chicago. He was a devoted husband and a cherished presence to those who knew him. His sudden passing has created a profound void, and his life is being remembered for the love, kindness, and dedication he showed to others.
Authorities confirmed that the crash remains under investigation, and no further details have been released at this time. State police urged drivers to slow down and avoid travel during dangerous weather conditions, noting that multiple additional crashes occurred along I-57 that morning.
As Chicago mourns this tragic loss, the community is asked to keep Matthew A. Siemer’s family—especially his wife—in thoughts and prayers. Though his life ended far too soon, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
