The Miami community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of 32-year-old Massiell Garay Sanchez, who was found inside a freezer at a Dollar Tree store on Sunday morning. Her unexpected passing has left family, friends, and neighbors heartbroken and searching for answers.

Massiell entered the store at 968 SW Eighth St. on her own the night before the incident but did not make any purchases. Investigators believe she accessed a restricted employee-only area where the freezer is located and remained there overnight. She was discovered unresponsive by employees returning the next morning.

Authorities confirmed that Massiell was not an employee and that foul play has been ruled out — she was not forced into the freezer. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death, including whether she may have been facing personal or mental health challenges.

Family members were seen outside the store, awaiting answers as detectives worked the scene. A van from the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office removed her body for further examination. The store, scheduled to open at 8 a.m., remained closed until around 1 p.m., reopening after police concluded their investigation.

Community members and customers expressed shock and sorrow over the tragic event.
“It’s something painful — a family heartbroken now because of the death of a person, and we don’t know what truly happened,” said customer Gerardo Nunez.

Massiell’s death is a devastating loss, leaving a void in the lives of her loved ones and the wider community. She was a beloved daughter, family member, and friend, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

The Miami community grieves alongside her family during this incredibly difficult time. May Massiell Garay Sanchez rest in peace. 🕊️
