BROOKLINE, Mass. — Authorities have identified the man fatally shot inside a Brookline residence Monday night as Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology lab director and professor.
Brookline police said officers responded around 8:33 p.m. to reports of gunshots at 9 Gibbs Street. Upon arrival, officers found Loureiro suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the building’s foyer. He was transported by ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Despite lifesaving efforts, Loureiro was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.
In a statement, MIT confirmed that Loureiro was a faculty member in the departments of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Physics, and served as the director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. The university expressed deep condolences to his family, students, and colleagues.
“Our deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving,” MIT said. “Focused outreach and conversations are taking place within our community to offer care and support for those who knew Prof. Loureiro, and a message will be shared with our wider community.”
Neighbors in the Gibbs Street area expressed concern and unease following the shooting, questioning whether the professor may have been targeted and expressing frustration over the limited information released by authorities.
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Massachusetts State Police are assisting Brookline police with the investigation. Officials have not identified a motive, and a source familiar with the case said that “everything is still on the table.”
The investigation remains active, and authorities said additional details will be released as they become available.
