BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Birmingham community is mourning the loss of a 72-year-old man who was killed Tuesday evening following an argument that turned deadly on Burrell Street.
According to Birmingham police, officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of Burrell Street around 6:20 p.m. after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Eddie Jemison, 72, of Birmingham, lying in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services transported Jemison to UAB Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the Birmingham Police Department said preliminary findings indicate that Jemison and the suspect were involved in an argument in the street prior to the shooting. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly shot Jemison. Police say the suspect did not flee the scene and remained there until officers arrived.
The suspect, identified only as a man, was taken into custody and is currently being questioned by investigators. Authorities say he will be held on a 48-hour felony extension at the Birmingham City Jail as the investigation continues.
Police have not yet released the suspect’s name or additional details surrounding the circumstances of the argument. The case remains under active investigation, and more information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
