Lynchburg, VA – Lynchburg Police have identified the victim in a fatal shooting as 52-year-old David L. Vaughter Jr., a resident of Lynchburg. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of Campbell Avenue on December 18 and has left the local community reeling.

According to police reports, the homicide stemmed from an altercation at a residence. During the argument, Vaughter was shot. He was immediately assisted by responding officers and transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 63-year-old John Levi Snead, also of Lynchburg. Snead faces multiple charges, including:

  • Second-Degree Murder
  • Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Brandishing a Firearm
  • Reckless Handling of a Firearm
  • Discharging a Firearm within the City

Snead’s last reported location was near the 800 block of Garland Street. Law enforcement is actively searching for him, and anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact the Lynchburg Police Department.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police are requesting that anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area of the 1400 block of Campbell Avenue, or who may have video surveillance or doorbell camera footage, come forward.
